In other words, Vaastu is the science of building and essentially the art of balancing nature with man-made environment and correct placement of man in such a manner so as to get the maximum benefits of the energy emanated by natural and man-made environment.
Before getting into the details of Vaastu Shastra, one
should understand the basics, i.e. the nature, which consists of five elements Sky, Air,
fire, Earth and Water. Vaastu is affected with positive power of three
elements: the earth, the water, the fire (the sun). As stated earlier, Vaastu
is an art of balancing nature with man-made structures or environment;
therefore, while understanding the concept of Vaastu, study of environment or nature
becomes imperative.
The Earth was formed about 460 million years ago and it was a fiery ball. In
due course of time, the rocks melted and the surface has formed and acquired
magnetism due to the magnetic particles embedded within. It has two poles,
North pole and South pole.
Sky is the endless space available on the universe. The universal concept of
sky is beyond the imagination and reaches of human being as it is a
never-ending eternal development.
The Air (Atmosphere) is composed of gases like oxygen, nitrogen,
carbon-di-oxide, helium, neon, krypton and vapour. Oxygen is life saving gas
indispensable to living organism.
The Water: Due to rainfall from clouds, water flowed into low lying area of
earth's surface and oceans were formed. The eternal water cycling is mystery of
nature.
The Sun: Sun plays a vital role in Vaastu Shastra. Which is source of life on
earth and this is the reason why Sun is worshipped as an incarnation of God or
the potential source of creation on the earth.
Sun has vast source of heat generation. Due to the far distance from sun to
earth, the earth receives only a fraction of the heat generated by sun and the
same is sufficient for existence of living organism on earth. See the
voluminous power of SUN the LIVING GOD!!
The Vaastu Shastra has not only devised an order pertaining
to the creation of manifested space, but have also ascertained a definitive
link between time cycles and the life of a person. Both the inner and the outer
states of being have been taken into consideration in all aspects of human
existence, be it with regard to the placing of a dwelling, an image, or the
size and position of any object within the matrix of the human society.
Ans :Nature consists of five basic elements. Your own body is made up of
these elements: (1) air (2) fire (3) water (4) earth and most importantly, (5)
Cosmic energy. When we synchronize our place of business and residence with
nature's energies, our personal location becomes a dynamic location, in order
for nature to release positive energy to benefit us. The science of Vaastu
Shastra helps us to do so by its understanding of directions & energies
controlling those directions.
Ans :Normally, it takes one month to six months. It also depends on the amount of rectification
recommended applied, the percentage of defects, topography, as well as
strengths of your Vedic horoscope. One has to consider, that the environmental
objects works on the Vibration, and, Vibrations working on the mind on the
inhabitant. One also has to consider the combination of time of purchase, the transaction
between the buyer & the seller, and various other factors of which Vaastu
is but a small part.
Ans :The most important factor is the topography of the land. Then comes the
water resource. Other elements like trees, electrical poles, direction of your
place and the size and shape of land are also important. The last, but equally
important is the position of the stars in your Vedic horoscope.
Ans :It is best to refer to Vaastu for improvement or enhancement of quality of life, rather than
referring to Vaastu as a problem solver. A man should realize the potential
that he has within him to putting the best of his efforts with balanced mind.
Only when he has completed the best of his ability taking records to a higher
help is logical.
Ans :Ignore both of them as the Vaastu deals with feelings and experiences
based on the energy patterns, and you being the experienceer, follow your gut
feeling and strengthen your mind.
Ans : Vaastu Shastra believes that basically all directions are objectively indifferent, i.e.
equally good or bad. The ‘goodness’ that we are interested in, depends on the
functional utility of that directions. For example, a flat with East entrance
but with toilet located in Northeast has one very good & one very bad
functional use of the direction. So, instead of generalizing, specific overall
evaluation should be employed to evaluate the property.
Ans : As per Vaastu Shastra, more than the foundation, the factors like
the surroundings, topography, and the quality of soil found on the land &
the shape of the land plays more important role. At the time of the science
being developed, the construction of the house was with mud and wood, whereas
nowadays technology governs the deal.
Ans : You should remove disturbance from TV and telephone etc. if any in your
room. Keep minimum things in the bedroom. Keep your head towards the South and
legs towards the North while sleeping. The other preferred thing is to
learn the art of healthy living and consult medical authority if the problem
continues.
Ans :South-West is by far the best and ideal for Master bedroom.
From ancient literature, we gather that Vaastu was treated
as the science of construction of temples and royal palaces. In Amarakosa, a
Sanskrit dictionary written by Amara Simha and epics like Skanda Purana, Agni
Purana, Garuda Purana and Vishnu Purana, the principles pertaining to the
science of Vaastu had been enunciated. Apart from these works, epics like the
Bruhatsamhita, Vishnu Dharmottara Purana, Viswakarma Vaastu Sastra, Samarangana
Sutra Dharana and Aparajita Prutchcha, have been responsible for Vaastu taking
shape as a science.
In the Matsya Purana, seventeen preceptors of Vaastu have
been mentioned. They are Bhrugu, Atri, Vasista, Viswakarma, Maya, Narada,
Nagnajit, Visalaksha, Purandara, Brahma, Kumaraswamy, Nandisa, Sounaka,
Bhargava, Vasudeva, Anirudha, Sukra and Bruhaspathi.
The first official treatise on Vaastu, the Kasyapa Silpa,
has been attributed to Sage Kasyapa.
In the treatise Agama Sastra, which explains the science of
temples, Vaastu is considered as the basis for any type of construction. Excavations
at Harappa and Mohenjodaro also indicate the influence of Vaastu on the Indus
Valley Civilization.
People in ancient India evolved various codes and systems
for a living, which is contained in ancient scriptures like Vedas, Upanishads
etc., to ensure peace, harmony and prosperity among people. With all their
wisdom, they put forth this science of Vaastu Shastra, which has constantly
been evolved since then, but without any difference in the basic philosophy or
fundamentals. Vastushastra has clear-cut definitions- Vastu means abode or
a house & Shastra means science or technology, i.e. it is the scientific
method of house construction. Vastushastra considers a house to be a living
soul, having prana. And therefore, this science in a way defines the
relationship between man and the cosmos. Indian civilization is considered as one of the oldest in
the world & hence Vaastu Shastra, Astrology etc. are also equally old
sciences.
As astrology remains a speculative science than result
oriented subject, the Vaastu Shastra is definitely a result oriented science if
laid down as per its norm would definitely give positive result.
If the structure is so designed that the positive forces
override the negative forces then there is a beneficial release of bio-energy,
which helps all the inmates to be healthy. Even after such reaction with the
negative forces a positive cosmic surplus is always present in such a
structure, which is the Supreme Being Himself. In such an atmosphere life is
smooth and happy with every thing in life coming your way without any great
struggle. It is a happy and healthy life for all the inhabitants.
Mayamatam :
Said to
have been authored by divine architect Maya, it comprises 3,300 verses and 36
chapters, all written in Sanskrit. Part of the Saivite agamic literature, the
text is said to have originated from the Tamil area of southern India. Drafted
during the Chola period - it describes architecture that had achieved the peak
of its maturity - it is divided into three sections dealing with: dwelling
sites, buildings, and vehicles and seats, and iconography. According to
Mayamatam sites should be selected only
after a thorough examination of their colour, odour, flavour, form, sound and
orientation. Of these, orientation is the most important factor according to Mayamatam.
Mansara:Larger than the Mayamatam at 5,400 verses and 70
chapters, the Mansara is part of the same category as the former. However, it
belongs to a different branch of the south Indian school of architecture.
Kamikagama:The first part of this body of text is completely
devoted to architecture. However, overlaps can be found with the Mayamatam. What is obscure is which text borrowed
from the other, or whether both borrowed from a third body of work.
Vaastu gives high importance to
the selection of the plot. If the topography of the plot is as per vaastu then
there is a strong positive energy field on the plot. This is favoured as even
if mistakes are committed in placements of the various utilities, a strong
field compensates and saves the inhabitants from the ill effects. We shall
briefly see the parameters preferred in Vaastu.
Facing
The problem arises when an owner
of a South or West-facing plot uses the rear half for building and goes for a
garden in the front. This will make the subtle energy areas in north and east
to come under great strain thus affecting their strength adversely. The dense
areas, which are in the front, are negatively strong and thus the whole
structure is placed in a distorted field. Most of the ill effects ensue because
of this problem. So before you purchase a plot decide the first question; would
you like a garden and wide-open space in the front or the rear?
It is amazing that Vastushastra
terms the WEST as one of the evil directions along with the SOUTH and the SOUTH-WEST. Vastushastra prescribes certain
procedures for avoiding ill effects of deficiences in the WEST direction. A
deeper analysis of these practices indicate a definite methodology to offer
protection against radiation from the west direction.
Fengshui is reportedly 4000 years old. Some historians believe that it was born in 600
A.D. Originally it was practiced by the Emperors and members of the Royal
Families. It was also held in great secret. Slowly the knowledge spread out and
today fengshui is widely practiced in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan,
Malaysia and to a lesser extent in the Europe and USA.
There are two schools in fengshui one is called the Compass School and the other is
called the Farm School. The Farm school is not particular about directions and
is more visual in approach. The Compass school stipulates what should exist in
which direction.
As per fengshui, there are three components on which universe is made of. Every
living being, every plant and every object is supposed to represent one of the
three. These are the Yin, Yang and Chi. Yang is male in nature where as Yin is
female in nature. Basically Yin and Yang are two forces, which are responsible
in creation and sustenance of all living and non-living objects on earth. Chi
is the force, which is produced due to the interaction of Yin and Yang.
The understanding of Yin,Yang and Chi is essential to understand the concept of
Fengshui where Yin and Yang are in balance, Chi is also balanced. There is no
plant, animal or object, which cannot be classified under Yin and Yang. Yin and
Yang interaction brings about energy, alertness, health, strength as well as
sound sleep and relaxation.
Chi is dynamic force and it is Yin, Yang and Chi which dynamically balance in the
whole universe. However, a landscape can alter the composition of Yin and Yang
and therefore alters the quality of Chi.
Manipulating the landscape to get the best form of Chi is the science of fengshui. Fengshui
believes that all the four directions should have different levels to create
excellent Chi. They prefer the turtle mountains at the back, the green
mountains representing the dragon on the left and the white tiger mountain on
the right. The plain open land should be in front of the plot. This is supposed
to be the best landscape where Chi is liberates in plenty.
VASTUSHASTRA AND FENG-SHUI:- It is
imperative that two of the well-known Eastern design methods-Feng-Shui (China)
and Vastushastra (India) are understood in a proper perspective, as both these disciplines in their own ways
define the relationship between man and the cosmos.
In Chinese language Feng means wind & Shui means water, implying
thereby that the technique involves balancing of the cosmic element water &
the cosmic quality “wind” in a system to achieve harmony with the cosmic
forces.
Location & design of rooms in
Feng-Shui are based on the traditional Le-Shu grid of nine squares which
assigns different directions. In Vastushastra the location of rooms are
designated in the Vastu Purush Mandal, consisting of nine squares as influenced by the journey of the sun in its
various phases.
Ans :The science of energy, which deals with the construction of houses,
palaces, temples and town, is called Vaastu Shastra. It reads the
characteristic of houses/plots and explains the effect of the same to the
inmate of houses. Basically, it is more than the science of indication; it is
the science of correction. It is subjective, intuitive insight for the ‘SEER’
or the ‘Practitioner’ and cannot be a general foot rule for all.
This science is also based on the laws of nature, its
theories offer us a way of understanding the relationship between humans and
their environment, its about how everything is connected and affects on our
well being.
The Science
Vaastu believes that there are essentially two types of
forces, which are equal and opposite in nature. The interaction of these two
forces is cosmic ordained and produces a third type of force, which is called
‘bioforce’ or ‘PRANA’, needed for life to exist. One type of force is
subtle and fine. The other is dark and dense. We can , for sake of
understanding this subject, call the first one as 'positive' and the other as
'negative'. 'prana' is liberated by the interaction of these forces.
Over the surface of the globe these forces continuously
interact releasing bio-energy. When a structure is built over the surface of
the earth it comes in the way of a natural interaction. Both the forces enter
the structure where the interaction continues. However, the intensity of forces
that enter the structure need not be the same. Depending on various factors
like levels, water bodies, door placement etc., either the positive or the
negative can have stronger presence.
If on the other hand the structure is built in such a manner
that the negative forces override the positive then you have a weak bio-energy
field which manifests as diseases in the occupants. The over bearing negative
field makes your actions, efforts, thinking negative so that ultimately the
whole life is ruined.
The science of Vaastu guides you about the rules you have to
follow so that the structure has a positive atmosphere.
Some of the most
comprehensive dissertations on the subject include:
Vaastu Applications:
Facing of the plots is not considered important. There is a wrong notion that
North and East facing plots are better than South and West facing plots. This
is not true.
One point however has to be borne
in mind. In the case of North or East facing plots the half of plot that lies
towards North or East is the sensitive portion. The rear half is dense. Thus
the building can come up in the rear half allowing for a beautiful front
garden. This increases the aesthetics as well.
This advantage will not be
available if the plot faces an approach road on South or West. Here, as you can
see, the sensitive half is in the rear and the dense portion capable of taking
the load of the building is in the front. Necessarily the building has to come
up in the first half facing the road. A owner of such a plot has to reconcile
himself for a backyard and garden as he will have less space in the front. If this
is acceptable by all means purchase a west or South-facing plot.
FENGSHUI
FengShui is a Chinese version of Vaastu. The word fengshui,
which is normally pronounced as ‘Foong’ means ‘Wind’ and ‘Shui’ is pronounced
as ‘Shway’ and means ‘Water’.
Comparison of Vastu Shastra &Feng-shui
Vaastushastra has clear-cut definitions- Vastu means abode or a house & shastra means science or
technology, i.e. it is the scientific method of house construction.
Vastushastra considers a house to be a living soul, having prana. Fengshui
scripts denote water, fire, wood, gold and earth as the basic five elements
forming the entire universe with ‘wind’ as the special quality attainable by
these elements. Vastushastra scriptures stress that every living and non-living
entity, for that matter the entire world, is created out of the Panch-Maha-Bhutas - earth, water, fire,
wind & ether. “Ether” is considered
the most important element in this system, as every possible transformation
from one element to the other has to be routed through Akashtatva only.
Vastushastra has its own system of Vastu-Chakras, which is used in conjunction
with Astrology; Astronomy & Yogashastra for site-selection & a magnetic
compass decides the directional aspect. Interestingly, both the systems insist
on N.S. orientation for a structure. Feng-Shui considers a land having reddish
or yellowish soil as a good geomantic land. Vastushastra considers a land with
white & yellow coloured soil for house construction. Red coloured soil is
tolerated in Vastushastra, but a site with black soil is prescribed for
construction purposes, as such lands are prone to water-logging problems- a kind of environmental pollution.
Feng-Shui insists that a body of water should flow in front of the main ent rance of the house. There is no
preferred direction of water flow as Feng-shui allows positioning of the main
entrance in any directions, depending on the birth year of the owner of the
house.
Vastushastra on the other hand considers water flow in the direction N.E. to the
Vastu as a beneficial factor with lunar-shaped (Chandrakar) N.E. directional
flow as a pointer to frame & prosperity.
A major discrepancy in both these
disciplines pertains to the direction of ventilator openings. Feng-shui
considers N. as evil & prefers S. direction for window openings. In
contrast Vastushastra dictates the position of windows should be in the N.E.or
N.E. directions only. Feng-Shui attempts to offer the households protection against
yellow dust and sand which the chinese mainland receives from the deserts situated on the N.
border of that country. Vastushastra follows scientific logic in selection of
the window directions, in the sense that it considers the beneficial effects of
early morning sunlight.
